Souvenir Sheet of 4
Wolfram Schubert, whose colorful paintings are appreciated by many art lovers, was one of the most famous Socialist GDR artists before 1989, but after 1990, like many of his artist friends, things got tough for him. Soviet-occupied East Germany, officially known as the German Democratic Republic, was reunited with West Germany on October 3, 1990 and the Soviet Union collapsed a year later. Many of his works, such as those in the Palace of the Republic or in Neubrandenburg, were torn down and there were no longer any exhibitions.
The artist, born in 1926, had to go to war and was a prisoner of war for five years. After the war he studied art and while in Pinakothek he saw a van Gogh show which inspired his style.
Many of his themes reflect the Socialist views of the time. In 1969, the painter created a two-part picture titled “Struggle and Victory of the Working Class” – featuring a picture of Karl Marx. He explained that it was a work that he would no longer paint today. “We were used back then,”
